Neighborhoods to Explore

Sultanahmet

Staying in Sultanahmet puts you in the center of the historical sites of Istanbul. It is the city's oldest area, as it was the center of life for the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. This is where you should stay if you want to be as close as possible to the Grand Bazaar, Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sofia, and Blue Mosque. This makes it the most popular neighborhood for tourists. It is also a great place for first-timers or those with limited time to explore Istanbul.   

Nisantasi

The Nişantaşı neighborhood is in the Sisli district. It is considered one of the more upscale areas of Istanbul and is often compared to Greenwich Village. You’ll stroll beautiful streets lined with 19th and early 20th-century elegant apartments. There are also exclusive restaurants and luxury boutiques to spend time in.  

Taksim

If you want to feel like you are in the center of the action, staying in Taksim is a great option. This is the area where Istiklal Street is located. This means you are just steps away from shopping, restaurants, and thriving nightlife. Finding luxury accommodations in this area is also easier than in some of the other neighborhoods. You are also centrally located for traveling around to the other areas of Istanbul. The Istanbul Metro Central Station is located in Taksim.   

Galata

Galata is next to Taksim, and often the two areas are combined. However, Galata is more artsy and hipster. It is also an ideal place to buy unique souvenirs. Staying in this area puts you right near the famous Galata Tower. This makes seeing one of Istanbul’s iconic landmarks easy.  

Kadıköy

For those that consider themselves foodies, staying in Kadıköy is ideal. It’s an arty neighborhood that is brimming with cafes, shops, and galleries. A must-see stop is the famous produce market. It is brimming with the freshest produce and specialty foods. Munch on roasted nuts or try a piece of honeycomb. Nearby, there are also plenty of restaurants and cafes.    

Balat

Get ready for an explosion of color. Balat is on the southern shore of the Golden Horn. It’s one of the most visually impressive and oldest districts in Istanbul. The historical homes are what command attention. They range in age from 50 to 200 years old and are painted a rainbow of colors. However, the food is also spectacular. This is a multicultural area, and it is reflected in the dining options. You’ll enjoy walking the cobblestone streets as you take pictures of the buildings, stop at a trendy cafe, and explore the many unique boutiques.  

Istanbul is a thriving city that is spread across two continents. As it has been a major trade center for centuries, it has developed into a culturally rich and diverse city.
