Bodrum Amphitheater

History  

The Bodrum Antique Theatre dates back to the 4th century BC. King Mausolos is credited with its building. It has a classic Greco-Roman design that you see in amphitheaters from that time. During this time, it had the name Theatre at Halicarnassus.  

At the time of its building, it could accommodate 13,000 spectators. People would gather to watch theatrical performances or fighting gladiators.  

The theater experienced a new life in 1973 when the Turkish government excavated and renovated the theater. Today, its capacity is slightly smaller at 10,000 people.

Like any classic theater, there are three parts, the stage, the orchestra, and the audience. This theater is in good condition. However, it isn’t the most purely authentic. Because the theater is used for modern concerts, some renovations and adjustments were made to make it safe for use. This amphitheater may disappoint if you are looking for authentic and untouched ruins. You will be impressed if you are looking for a picturesque site that creates an ancient ambiance with a rich cultural history.  

Take a look at the stone seats as you walk around. You will see names engraved. Some theorize that these names are the people that helped to get the amphitheater built, similar to modern theater benefactors. The acoustics of the theater are impressive. Sit up at the top, and you can easily hear the voices of people speaking while standing on the stage.  

Location  

The Bodrum Amphitheater sits high on a hill above the town center of Bodrum. You can walk to the theater from some of the other sites in and around Bodrum. If you plan to visit the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, it is about a 30-minute walk. Walk to the top of the amphitheater, and you will be rewarded with impressive views. You can see Bodrum Castle, Kara Ada Island, and Kos on a clear day.  

Summer Concerts  

This Bodrum Antique Theatre is seeing a new life in modern times. Every summer, when the weather gets warm, this open-air museum becomes a concert venue. Local and international performers will play on the stage. These concerts typically occur in the evening after the hot sun has set behind the Aegean Sea.  

How to Visit  

Visiting the Bodrum Amphitheater is easy because it is within walking distance of Bodrum’s other major attractions. Admission is free and open Tuesday through Sunday from 9-5. There are no organized tours, but you can easily wander around on your own during the day. You can arrange a private tour if you want a more in-depth experience.  

If you visit Bodrum during the summer, you could attend one of the many concerts hosted at the amphitheater. You will need to purchase tickets in advance. Be sure to bring a pillow or towel, as the stone seats can get hot during the day, and feel uncomfortable when sitting on them for long periods.
